3. Key points and analysis of the 1987/1988 season

  1. The UCI Basketball team finished the regular season with a record of 14-13, identical the that of the previous season. UCI also finished fifth in the PCAA with a 9-9 record in conference play. Counting the PCAA tournament, they finished the season 16-14.
  2. UCI hosted the Freedom Bowl Classic (previously the Anteater Classic) in the Bren Center and won the tournament, defeating Army 90-68 in the first round, and then Manhattan 86-83 in the finals. The tournament was held the Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.
  3. With the help of some inspired play by Wayne Englestad, UCI knocked off arch rival Long Beach State in the first round of the PCAA tournament, 74-69, a team it had lost to twice during the regular season.
  4. In the second round of the PCAA tournament, UCI defeated heavily favored UNLV, 74-70.
  5. UCI played Utah State in the finals of the PCAA Tournament, leading most of the game. Utah State, however, eventually won that game, 86-79. Despite the loss, Wayne Englestad was named most valuable player of the tournament.
  6. The UCI Band went to an away game at UC Santa Barbara and stayed overnight in the homes of the UCSB band members. The two bands got together at the end of the game and played a post-game chart.
  7. UCSB lost in the second round of the PCAA Tournament to Utah State. About 10 or so of their band sat in with the UCI Band during the finals.
  8. The UCI Band had a slight decline in membership from the previous year.
