3. Key points and analysis of the 1986/1987 season

  1. The UCI Basketball team endured another rebuilding year as the team finished with a 14-14 record, 9-9 in conference play, and tied for 4th place.
  2. UCI hosted its first annual Anteater Classic. Because the Bren Center was not ready, UCI held its tournament at Long Beach Arena. UCI made it into the finals and played Iowa in a very close and high scoring game, losing 103-105. The Iowa band was even there, mainly because their football team was playing Holiday Bowl down in San Diego. I can still remember seeing the thousands of Iowa fans standing and singing their fight song as the band played.
  3. UNLV avenged its losses to UCI by defeating UCI 114-72 in Las Vegas and 114-103 in Irvine.
  4. The UCI Band went to Las Vegas that year and witnessed the massacre. I recall being stunned and depressed after the game.
  5. UCI defeated Cal State Fullerton twice during the regular season, breaking a string of six consecutive losses. CSUF, however, defeated UCI when it mattered the most: the first round of the PCAA tournament, 81-92.
  6. Buddy Lang assumed control of the UCI Band, ousting Bill Saichek in what appeared to be a music department coup. Earlier, the music department had refused to offer the Band as a class as long as Bill Saichek was director.
  7. The Band remained strong that year, averaging 50 at home games and about 30-40 going out after games for pizza.
  8. About eight of us went on a trip to Matzatlan during Memorial Day weekend.
  9. The Bren Center opened on January 8, 1987 and UCI Basketball team defeated Utah State 118-96 in front of a sellout crowd.
  10. Sharon Mahler, UCI class of 1981, took a job in Huntsville, AL that spring and left the UCI Band. So ended 10 years of spirited participation.
