1985/1986 - Key points and analysis

  1. The UCI Basketball team probably had its best team ever in terms of talent. Because their schedule was significantly tougher than in the 1981-1982 season, their 17-13 overall record seems pale in comparison to the 22-7 record of 1981-1982. The team finished with a 12-6 record in the PCAA, good enough for 2nd place.
  2. UCI defeated UNLV twice that season, 99-92 at UNLV and 95-88 at home (in Crawford Hall).
  3. UCI was defeated by Cal State Fullerton three times that season, including both regular season games and in the opening round of the PCAA Tournament.
  4. UCI's final regular season game was against Cal State Fullerton. By losing that game at home, it had to face Cal State Fullerton in the opening round of the PCAA Tournament, in what proved to be a strange twist of fate. By losing to Cal State Fullerton, UCI lost all chances of an NCAA berth, despite finishing second that year in the PCAA.
  5. UCI did, however, earn an NIT bid. It drew UCLA, the NIT champion from the previous year, and played them at Pauley Pavilion. UCI defeated UCLA 80-74 in a game that would become legend.
  6. UCI lost to BYU in the second round. The UCI Band attended both the game at UCLA and the game at BYU in Provo Utah.
  7. The UCI Band performed its Wipeout routine during half-time out on the court at BYU.
  8. The UCI Band had its largest and best band ever, musically speaking. We had about 70 people on the rolls and averaged about 50 people at every game. We brought over 40 people to the away game at UNLV and about 25 to BYU. The game to BYU was the most trying one as it was during finals week and we took a bus to get there.
